You need a multimeter to do the sort of stuff talked about on this forum. If you get one you'll wonder how you survived without it. You can get a nice Auto-ranging one for cheap at this store:

Don't forget to get an auto-ranging one and buy extras of the fuses that it requires (call for exact part #'s).
